In Spite of the Downpour Bavarian Flood Conditions Improve

Since the recent floods, the water levels in Bavaria have become less intense. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) forecasts thunderstorms and rain in certain parts of the state, but the overall situation is expected to remain stable through the weekend. Most Danube flood stations have reported decreased water levels overnight on Saturday, and this trend is likely to continue, per the flood warning service’s predictions.

The town of Kelheim is still facing high water issues, but its dams are still functioning, as confirmed by a police spokesperson on Saturday. Straubing and Passau also experienced the same, with the latter being expected to see their Danube water level drop under level 3 warning by the evening. The city has declared that the state of emergency will end from Saturday afternoon. Passau’s flood situation remains at level 3 warning for now.

The situation in Upper Palatinate has also eased, as the Regensburg water level has dropped below level 2 warning overnight. Residents of the hazardous Werftstraße street were granted access to their homes on Friday. The safety measures implemented for this flood-vulnerable street have been finalized, according to a city press representative on Saturday morning. The extent of the Werftstraße damage remains to be assessed. No additional steps are currently planned. The Danube flood protection structures will remain in place for the time being, despite the continued decline in water levels. And the state of emergency is also not anticipated to be lifted for the time being.

Until Monday, the DWD anticipates thunderstorms and rain primarily in the south. Saturday could bring thunderstorms with up to 40 liters of rain per square meter, gusty storm winds reaching 100 kilometers per hour, and the possibility of hail. Though these rainfall levels raise concern, the flood warning service sees no need for a new warning: “The rain volume is not significant in this area,” they stated. Initially, only warning levels 1 and 2 are expected for heightened water levels.
