Earthquakes Shake Ocean Floor Near Vancouver Island
Several earthquakes were recorded off the western coast of Vancouver Island late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, with at least eight quakes occurring about 250 km west of Tofino. The largest earthquake was a magnitude 5.7, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the activity, no tsunami threat was reported. Most of the quakes, which ranged between magnitudes 4.3 and 4.6, occurred around 10 km below the seafloor and were not felt on land. The swarm of earthquakes took place between the Juan de Fuca and Pacific plates, an area known for significant tectonic activity. Coastal residents are advised to remain prepared for potential earthquakes.
