Heatwave Persists in N.W.T.

Northwest Territories Endures Intense Heat Wave

A severe heat wave is impacting parts of the Northwest Territories, with temperatures soaring up to 35°C. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued heat warnings for regions including Deh Cho, South Slave, Sahtu, and parts of the North Slave. Meteorologist Brian Proctor noted that this heat wave, part of a broader event affecting Western Canada, could last seven to eight days. Some areas, especially near the Alberta border, are experiencing significant heat, while northern communities and those around Great Slave Lake are slightly less hot.
Proctor highlighted the challenge of consecutive days of high temperatures with minimal overnight cooling, which hampers recovery from the heat. Additionally, smoke from nearby wildfires could worsen due to the stagnant weather conditions.
In response, the community of Gamètì has set up a cooling center in the local gym to provide relief, especially for vulnerable groups like children and elders. Residents are being advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the heat.
