Death Toll Climbs to 47

Floods Devastate Southern China

Summary:
The death toll from recent heavy rains and flooding in Guangdong province, southern China, has risen to 47, according to state media reports. This summer, China has experienced extreme weather, including record flooding in the south and a severe heatwave in the north. The flooding caused landslides, inundations, and extensive damage, affecting more than 55,000 people, destroying over 2,200 homes and nearly 4,700 roads, and damaging power facilities, water pipelines, and nearly 7,000 hectares of crops. Economic losses are estimated at 5.85 billion yuan ($805.7 million). The central government has allocated 105 million yuan ($14.5 million) for emergency flood relief. Meanwhile, northern China has faced temperatures above 35°C (95°F), with authorities issuing heat warnings. Scientists attribute the extreme weather to climate change, with China being the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Beijing has pledged to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
