Australian Streamer Regulation Stirs Industry Anxiety

Australia’s Screen Industry Faces Uncertainty Amid Streaming Regulation Delays

Last week, Australia’s screen industries celebrated an increase in the country’s Location Offset scheme, but concerns are mounting within the production community over the lack of streaming regulation. Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner warned that without this regulation, Australia risks becoming primarily a service provider for Hollywood rather than fostering its own industry. The recent rise in Location Offset rebates from 16.5% to 30% is expected to boost international investment but is criticized for not supporting local content adequately. The delay in implementing streaming regulations, which would mandate how much local revenue streamers must invest in Australian content, is causing anxiety among local producers. Data shows a decline in spending on Australian content by major global streamers, raising fears that local culture and heritage are being overshadowed. The SPA emphasizes the need for a balance between local and international projects to ensure the growth of homegrown Australian storytelling.
