Atmospheric Rivers Threaten B.C. with Floods, Avalanches

Atmospheric River Brings Heavy Rain and Avalanche Threat to B.C.

British Columbia is bracing for a series of atmospheric river storms, bringing heavy rain and heightened risks of flooding and avalanches. Originating from Hawaii, this “pineapple express” setup will lead to significant rainfall, with some areas expecting over 200 mm by month’s end. Vancouver Island and B.C.’s South Coast, including Metro Vancouver, are particularly vulnerable. The storms, starting this weekend, will bring torrential rain, with a first wave hitting Saturday night and another Sunday evening. The tropical moisture will raise freezing levels, exacerbating snowmelt and further increasing flood and avalanche risks. Residents are advised to clear storm drains to prevent pooling and prepare for potential disruptions.
