Severe Storms Cause Widespread Power Outages in Connecticut

Thousands of power outages have been reported across Connecticut due to a storm system that swept through the state on Sunday. The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for multiple counties, including Fairfield, Hartford, and New Haven, effective until 7 p.m. Additionally, a flash flood warning was issued for some counties, valid until 6 p.m., impacting areas prone to poor drainage.
As of 3 p.m., utility company Eversource reported 8,409 outages, with high concentrations in Colchester, Columbia, and Canton, while United Illuminating reported 122 outages. The storm follows a recent severe weather event that caused widespread damage and a fatality in Willimantic.
The weather service also confirmed a tornado in Lincoln, Rhode Island, which uprooted trees and damaged structures. Sunday’s storms are attributed to a cold front interacting with an unstable airmass. The forecast predicts that severe storms may continue until 10 p.m., followed by mostly clear skies and a low around 59 degrees. Monday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 77 degrees.
