Flooding Displaces Thousands in Central Region
Summary:
Over 2,000 residents from Gomoa Adawukwa, Mampong, Effutu Atekyedo, and Ekuroful in the Central Region have been displaced due to flooding caused by the Ayensu River. The flooding resulted from the river’s diversion by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway expansion. More than 200 houses have been submerged, with three completely collapsed, and acres of farmland destroyed. Effutu NADMO officer Isaac Ephraim Okine described the situation as dire and assured assistance for the displaced individuals, many of whom are currently staying with relatives and friends. The Gomoa Police Service is managing traffic to prevent further issues. Affected residents appealed for help from the government and NGOs after water levels rose suddenly on June 5, leading to the overflow onto highways and communities.
