Quake Shakes Northern Venezuela, Caribbean

Strong Earthquake Strikes Southeastern Caribbean Sea

Late Saturday night, a preliminary 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern Caribbean Sea, about 20 miles northeast of Yaguaraparo, Venezuela, and 60 miles from Port of Spain, Trinidad. According to the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of 30 miles, making it relatively shallow. Approximately 4.4 million people across Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines experienced shaking. No major damage or casualties have been reported. The earthquake took place along the fault line separating the Caribbean Plate from the South American Plate, an area known for high seismic activity, including the North Coast Fault Zone and El Pilar Fault Zone.
