Philippine Delegation Visits PEI Potato Industry

Philippines and PEI Strengthen Agricultural Ties

The article highlights the ongoing collaboration between The Philippines and the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Potato Board, which began following a successful mission in 2019 that led to significant seed sales to The Philippines. A Filipino delegation, mostly comprising farmers and members of the largest potato farmers’ cooperative in The Philippines, is visiting PEI from June 9 to 15. Their itinerary includes tours of potato farms, meetings with agriculture businesses, and discussions with senior government officials. The visit aims to expand potato knowledge, improve production methods, and explore climate change mitigation strategies.
Donald Stavert, chair of the PEI Potato Board Seed Committee, expressed enthusiasm about the renewed partnership, noting its significance during the 75th year of diplomatic relations between Canada and The Philippines. The Philippines is Canada’s second-largest agri-food and seafood export market in the ASEAN region. The visit is expected to strengthen trade, investment, and food security ties, aligning with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.
PEI Potatoes are celebrated globally for their taste and quality, attributed to the island’s unique red soil. The potato industry significantly impacts PEI’s economy, generating $1.35 billion and employing over 8.8% of the island’s full-time workforce. The PEI Potato Board is committed to maintaining a sustainable and high-performing potato industry.
