NESREA Shuts Down 46 Facilities Across 10 Nigerian States
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down 46 facilities in 10 Nigerian states due to various breaches of the National Environmental Regulations (NERs). The infractions, which occurred in states including Borno, Gombe, and Ogun, among others, involved violations such as non-compliance with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act, failure to develop Environmental Management Plans (EMP), lack of effluent treatment plants, and inadequate environmental auditing. NESREA’s Director General, Dr. Innocent Barikor, expressed serious concern over these non-compliance issues, highlighting their detrimental impact on public health and the environment. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and encouraged the public to report violations. The actions were detailed in a circular signed by Mrs. Amaka Ejiofor, the agency’s assistant director of press.
