Climate Change Impact on Agriculture in Upper East Region Highlighted at Public Lecture

Climate Change Threatens Agriculture in Ghana’s Upper East Region, Experts Warn
By Anthony Adongo Apubeo
At a public lecture in Bolgatanga, experts highlighted the severe impacts of climate change on agriculture in Ghana, particularly in the Upper East Region. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall are causing prolonged droughts and poor agricultural yields, threatening food security and economic stability.
Key speakers, including Professor David Millar and Professor Albert Luguterah, emphasized the need for media to influence policy and support farmers, especially smallholders, in adopting climate-smart practices. They stressed the importance of monitoring climate financing to ensure funds reach vulnerable communities.
The lecture, themed “The effects of climate change on agriculture in Ghana: the case of Upper East Region,” was organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in collaboration with Feed the Future USAID/Policy Link. It also marked the launch of the third edition of the regional GJA awards.
Experts called for intensified education on environmental protection and assistance for farmers with early maturing and drought-resistant crops. The media was urged to play a critical role in reporting and advocating for effective climate action and resource allocation.
