Hurricane Beryl Strikes Jamaica, Heads to Mexico

Caribbean Community Mobilizes for Hurricane Beryl Relief Efforts in NYC

Relief efforts are in full swing in New York City’s Caribbean community as residents anxiously monitor Hurricane Beryl’s progress. The storm has already claimed at least seven lives in the Southeast Caribbean and left thousands without power. Although Beryl has weakened from a Category 5 to a Category 4 hurricane, it continues to cause significant damage, especially in Jamaica.
In Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean neighborhood, people are closely following updates and staying in touch with loved ones in the storm-affected areas. Nadine Ducille, a cook, and Grace Clark, a shop employee, are both actively ensuring their families’ safety. Eugene Pursoo, president of Caribbean Diaspora United, expressed concern for Grenada’s fragile economy and the long-term impacts on agriculture. Dr. Trevor Dixon, founder of the JAHJAH Foundation, is preparing to provide medical assistance in Jamaica, emphasizing the health risks posed by standing water.
Community leaders like Pursoo and Dixon are mobilizing resources and organizing relief efforts, reflecting the Caribbean diaspora’s resilience and solidarity in times of natural disasters.
