Georgia Power Hosts Hurricane Preparedness Summit Amid Predictions of Active 2024 Season
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Georgia Power conducted its Hurricane Preparedness Summit on Tuesday in response to forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting an active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with NOAA forecasting an 85% chance of above-normal activity.
During the summit, Georgia Power’s Storm Center Manager, Jason Stott, showcased the company’s Storm Center located at its headquarters in Atlanta. The center is crucial for planning and coordinating responses to hurricanes. Stott emphasized that preparedness is crucial regardless of the season’s activity level, as the impact of a single storm can be significant.
Georgia Power collaborates with the Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia Emergency Management Association to restore power in affected communities. Their efforts include the use of response drones, a mobile command center, and mobile response teams.
Lineman Malachai Eskin, who has been with Georgia Power for six years and aided in the response to Hurricane Michael, highlighted the rewarding nature of restoring power for customers, despite the personal sacrifices involved.
