Tropical Disturbance Poised to Drench Florida with Heavy Rainfall
A slow-moving unnamed tropical disturbance is poised to dump significant amounts of moisture over Florida, potentially resulting in triple-digit rainfall totals by next weekend. Southern Florida is expected to experience widespread localized flooding due to heavy rains, which could be exacerbated by the existing severe drought conditions in some areas. The U.S. National Hurricane Center does not anticipate this system developing into a full-blown tropical cyclone, but it will still bring extensive tropical moisture to the region.
Forecasters predict torrential downpours across areas including the Florida Keys, Ft. Myers, Miami, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale, with potential flash flood watches extending into central Florida. Rainfall totals could reach up to 300 mm in some locations, posing major flooding risks, especially given the already saturated soils from recent rains and the drought over the past three months.
Residents are advised to stay alert for severe weather warnings on their mobile devices and avoid driving or walking through flooded areas due to the risk of washed-out roads and the presence of dangerous wildlife like alligators and snakes in floodwaters.
