Extreme Heat in India Linked to Climate Change
New Delhi: A recent report by Climate Central highlights that human-induced climate change has significantly contributed to extreme heat conditions, affecting 619 million Indians over just nine days in mid-June. This figure represents the highest number of people impacted by extreme heat globally during this period.
Published on June 27, the report reveals that over 60% of the world’s population—approximately 4.97 billion people—experienced extreme heat made at least three times more likely by climate change between June 16 and 24. This data was derived from the Climate Shift Index (CSI), a tool launched in 2022 that measures the influence of climate change on daily temperatures. A CSI level three, for example, indicates that a specific temperature is now three times more common due to climate change.
The report underscores that India was the most affected nation, with 619 million people facing extreme heat, followed by China (579 million) and Indonesia (231 million). The extreme heat in India led to over 40 cases of heatstroke and more than 100 fatalities by mid-June.
