Earthquake Alters Ganges River Path 2,500 Years Ago

Massive Earthquake Altered Ganges River Course 2,500 Years Ago
A significant earthquake around 2,500 years ago drastically changed the course of the Ganges River in what is now Bangladesh, an area still vulnerable to seismic activity. Researchers discovered this event caused a major river-channel shift, an occurrence known as avulsion, which is notable for its unprecedented scale. The Ganges, originating from the Himalayas and forming the world’s second-largest river system, was rerouted during the quake, potentially endangering ancient populations with flooding.
The quake, estimated to be of magnitude seven or eight, likely originated from tectonic activity in the region’s subduction zones or faults near the Himalayas. Modern repercussions could affect up to 140 million people, stressing the need for awareness and preparedness in similar regions worldwide.
The study, highlighting the Ganges River’s historic and current significance, was published in Nature Communications.
