Flooding in Pune Blamed on Land Concretisation
Pune Municipal Commissioner Addresses Flooding Concerns
Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale has attributed the recent flooding and waterlogging in the city to the extensive concretisation of land within housing societies. Following a review of the flooding caused by heavy rains, Bhosale noted that the lack of open land for water percolation is a significant issue.
Bhosale urged housing societies to create trenches of bare land to facilitate water absorption and mentioned that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon develop a policy to prevent complete ground concretisation. Additionally, Bhosale highlighted the inadequate capacity of the city’s storm water drains to manage the heavy rainfall and mentioned that the PMC is working on identifying and resolving chronic waterlogging spots. The issue of diverted and closed nullas will also be investigated.
In response to a tragic incident where a girl drowned in a construction pit on Katraj-Kondhwa road, Bhosale assured that action will be taken against the responsible contractor and civic engineer for inadequate safety measures.
