Few US States Enforce Heat Exposure Standards
In response to extreme temperatures, President Joe Biden has proposed a new federal rule to address workplace heat exposure, aiming to protect around 36 million workers. Currently, only a few states have such standards. The proposal comes amid high heat advisories affecting millions and is part of Biden’s broader strategy to tackle extreme weather, which has significant human, economic, and psychological impacts. The plan includes identifying heat hazards, implementing emergency response plans, and training on heat illness. Some business groups oppose the rule, citing implementation challenges. If enacted, it would override existing state laws, requiring stringent heat protection measures nationwide.
