Hurricane Watch and Storm Surge Alert for Southern Texas
Summary:
A hurricane watch and storm surge watch have been issued for parts of southern coastal Texas as Tropical Storm Beryl approaches the Mexico-Texas border, expected to strengthen back into a hurricane by Sunday. After weakening upon landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula, Beryl is moving northwest across the Gulf of Mexico, targeting areas like Corpus Christi with potential impacts including strong winds, coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents. Currently, Beryl has sustained winds of 60 mph and is projected to reach the coast as a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph winds.
In preparation, Corpus Christi has distributed thousands of sandbags. The storm has already caused significant damage in Jamaica and the Lesser Antilles, with widespread power outages and structural damages. Beryl previously became the earliest storm to reach Category 5 strength in the Atlantic, setting multiple records. Further watches and warnings are anticipated for northeastern Mexico and the Texas coast.
