B.C. Braces for Intense Heat Wave with Temperatures Near 40 C
B.C. Braces for First Prolonged Heat Wave of 2024
British Columbia is gearing up for its first extended heat wave of the year with temperatures potentially hitting 40 degrees Celsius in areas like Kamloops and Osoyoos. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued weather alerts for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and other regions, forecasting highs in the low 30s and even higher inland. This sudden spike follows a cooler, wetter June, shifting temperatures to 8-12 degrees above normal.
Authorities warn that the heat poses serious health risks, especially as temperatures remain high overnight. The BC Heat Alert and Response System (HARS), integrated with ECCC’s extreme weather alert system, may escalate alerts from special weather statements to heat warnings and, in severe cases, extreme heat emergencies.
Health officials advise residents to take precautions such as closing windows during the day, using air conditioning, and seeking cooler public spaces. Vulnerable groups, including older adults, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing conditions, are urged to be particularly cautious and stay hydrated.
For more detailed information and tips on coping with the heat, residents are encouraged to refer to the B.C. government’s Extreme Heat Preparedness Guide.
