FAO Highlights Biotechnology’s Role in Global Agrifood Systems
At the ongoing International Conference on Biotechnology 2024 (ICoB24) in Abuja, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) underscored the transformative potential of agricultural biotechnology in addressing global food security and enhancing agrifood systems. Dr. Dominique Koffy Kouacou, FAO’s representative, highlighted the urgent need for biotechnological advancements due to rising food demands, limited resources, and environmental challenges. He stressed that biotechnology can improve nutrition, resilience to climate change, and pest and disease resistance.
The conference, themed “Biotechnology as an Engine for Economic Growth,” hosted several experts who discussed various aspects of biotechnology. Topics included the importance of high-quality seeds, plant varietal protection, and the role of seed technology in food security. Dr. Khalid Ishiag, representing NASC, and Dr. Okelola Folarin, discussed the certification and protection of plant varieties to enhance agricultural productivity. Dr. Bernard Ehirim from AATF highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in adopting seed technologies.
The panel, moderated by Dr. Rose Gidado, emphasized that biotechnology holds significant promise for Nigeria’s future, offering solutions for sustainable agriculture and economic development. The session aimed to raise awareness and promote collaboration to leverage biotechnology for a prosperous and food-secure future.
