Hurricane Beryl Strikes Texas Coast
In a significant weather event, Hurricane Beryl has made its third and final landfall as a Category 1 hurricane along the Texas coast near Matagorda early Monday morning. Initially forming in late June and driven by record-high ocean temperatures, Beryl rapidly strengthened and first made landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island on July 1 as a Category 4 hurricane, eventually becoming the earliest Category 5 hurricane recorded. The storm caused significant destruction in the southern Caribbean Islands, leading to the loss of at least six lives. Beryl then hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before heading towards Texas. The hurricane has caused several thousand power outages between Matagorda and Galveston. A hurricane warning is in effect from Mesquite Bay to Port Bolivar, while a tropical storm warning extends north of Port Bolivar to Sabine Pass. Additionally, a storm surge warning is in place from Mesquite Bay to Sabine Pass, including Matagorda Bay and Galveston Bay, indicating the potential for life-threatening inundation.
