Summer Heat Response Plan for Homeless in Winnipeg
The Extreme Weather Response Committee has introduced a Summer Weather Response Plan in Winnipeg to protect homeless individuals during extreme heat. Co-chair Jamil Mahmood emphasized the plan’s flexibility and readiness to assist those in need throughout the summer. The plan includes measures such as committee meetings, funding for homeless services, water distribution, cooling locations, and pop-up cooling tents when heat warnings are issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Despite the positive outlook, both Mahmood and Jason Whitford from End Homelessness Winnipeg highlight the necessity for more permanent housing solutions. The complete plan, along with maps to shelters and water stations, is accessible online.
