6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Tanimbar Islands
Summary:
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia’s Maluku province at 6:55 p.m. local time on June 24, 2024. The epicenter was located in the waters off the islands at a depth of 153 kilometers, about 170 kilometers southwest of the Tanimbar Islands district, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. Tremors were felt as far as Selu and northeast of Southwest Maluku district. The Tanimbar Islands, notable for their World War II history, are part of the seismically active Ring of Fire. Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on this tectonic boundary. The deadliest earthquake in the region occurred in Aceh province on December 26, 2004, which, along with a subsequent tsunami, claimed around 230,000 lives across multiple countries.
