2024’s First Hurricane: Storm Named

Texas Braces for Tropical Storm Alberto’s Impact

Summary:
Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is moving towards Texas and northeastern Mexico. The storm is expected to bring severe weather, including up to a foot of rain in Texas and up to 20 inches in parts of Mexico, causing flash flooding, mudslides, and dangerous surf conditions. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has activated the National Guard in preparation. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings, and the storm is expected to make landfall early Thursday. Alberto is part of what is predicted to be an extraordinarily active hurricane season, with up to 25 named storms anticipated. Meanwhile, much of the U.S. is experiencing record-breaking heat, particularly in the Upper Midwest and Northeast.
